Vaughn Woods

Northern Parula
Vaughan Woods in Hallowell is located minutes away from the Capitol Building. Birders will find old growth stands of pine and hemlock, as well as oak and beech. Warblers, vireos, and flycatchers move about the canopy while thrushes and ovenbirds rule the understory. Vaughan Brook tumbles through the heart of the woodland, which has attracted nesting Louisiana waterthrushes in recent years at this northernmost edge of its range. A field hidden in the woods contains bobolinks and savannah sparrows.

Directions: From Water Street in Hallowell, turn up Central Street, drive three blocks, turn left onto Middle Street and follow to the end. A small parking lot marks the trail entrance. There are no facilities.
