The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge protects a number of scattered salt marshes and estuaries from the New Hampshire border to Cape Elizabeth. The headquarters in Wells maintains a one-mile walking trail that meanders through white pine forest containing a good number of pine warblers, and a salt marsh with an equally good number of saltmarsh sparrows.
Directions: from Route 1 turn east onto Route 9. The entrance is 0.7 miles from the intersection.
