Muscovic Road

Black-backed Woodpecker
The Muscovic Road is an ordinary logging road, except for the first mile. The first mile passes through strongly boreal habitat, and is an easy walk for northern forest species. Although good birding begins at the intersection with Rt 161, it is better to park in a large pull-off area just ahead on the left, in order to stay out of the way of occasional logging trucks. Boreal chickadees and Canada jays are possible right in the lot.

Walk slowly. American three-toed and black-backed woodpeckers have recurred regularly. Nearly 20 species of warbler have been documented, including the northern specialities, Tennessee, Cape May, bay-breasted, Canada, and Wilson's. Evening grosbeaks and white-winged crossbills visit often. Alder, yellow-bellied, and olive-sided flycatchers are often present.

Directions: From the split of Route 161 and Route 1 just north of Caribou, follow Route 161 for 15 miles. After crossing the Madawaska River, look for a dirt road on the right.
