Mast Landing is a 140-acre Maine Audubon Sanctuary located just a three-minute drive from L.L. Bean and downtown Freeport. For birders, the sanctuary’s chief asset is its proximity to town. It provides pleasant trails for hiking and birding while family members shop. There is a variety of trails passing through mixed forest habitat, the remnants of old orchards, and the Mill Stream Trail, which passes through riparian habitat. This is not a place to look for uncommon species, but black-capped chickadees, red-breasted nuthatches, golden-crowned kinglets, a variety of woodpeckers, and an abundance of common warblers are likely.
Directions: From downtown Freeport on Route 1, turn east onto Bow Street from the middle of town in front of LL Bean. Follow 1.1 miles and turn left onto Upper Mast Landing Road. The sanctuary is just 0.2 miles ahead on the right.
